Today it represents not only an early Christian and medieval monument, but also a fundamental point in the history of Milan and the Ambrosian Church. It was built between 379 and 386 by order of Bishop Ambrose himself, who dedicated it to the holy martyrs buried there (i.e. the holy martyrs Satiro, Vittore, Nabore, Vittore, Felice, Valeria, Gervasio and Protasio). The name of the church became 'Sant'Ambrogio' upon the death of the founding bishop. Important expansion works were ordered by Bishop Angilberto II, while the lantern was built in the 12th century.
